Senior Portraits

Those who follow my blog know that I primarily shoot sports, although I've been doing some wildlife and portrait work recently.

Well recently one of my sisters asked if I would take some senior portraits of my nephew and of course I said yes. I am trying to become a better portrait photographer and that's what brothers and uncles do.

Our families all went to a local park to take these pictures. I was very pleased with was I was seeing on my camera's LCD and viewfinder and when I got home and uploaded them I became even more so. Not to toot my own horn but these are some of the best shots I've done. I tried some new techniques with composition and processing and was very pleased.

Those of you who do this sort of thing I would love to hear what you have to say about my end result. Thanks in advance.

  1. I second that. I love looking through your sports stuff. Looks like I'll be loving your portrait work too!

  2. Hey Jim, nice to see some portraits. Love these. Some of them are rockin when he doesn't smile, yet I want to see him smile. He looks like he loves to have fun! I am going to recommend 2 things (and they are very minor). The first is to boost his eyes a bit. I know that is the captivating part of a senior portrait and getting them to 'pop' would be awesome. The second is to create a soft look, too. You have a great DOF in them and I would love to see some when the image has a 'creamy' look. Does that make sense? Besides that, I love 2, 3, 5, and the second to last. Beautiful color and nice captures. You have really done a great job working with portraits, too. Can't wait to see some more!

  3. One my instructors at photography school is pretty much the master of portraits here in NC. His name is Ashley Fetner and has been in the business for over thirty years. This style may be a little stoic for you guys on the west coast but he definitely has a lot of practical knowledge about dealing with clients, shooting great portraits, and post-production editing. He has helped me a great deal.

  5. These are great! I haven't ventured into seniors yet, but I know how hard it is to pose a single person. I love the b&w and the baseball captures are my favorite!
