Lakewood Varsity Football vs Serra

First Varsity game of the season and first game under the lights for my new Canon 7D mark II.  Wasn't sure how the camera was going to handle at higher ISO's, but I did believe anything had to be better than my prior camera (Canon 1D mark IIn), which had a max ISO of 3200.

This game started out just like any normal game at the beginning of the season.  We had some light and I simply increased my ISO and slowed down the shutter as the light went away.  By the end of the night I was at f/2.8, 1/500, and an ISO of 10000.  I have to say for the first time out I am very happy.  I will consider pushing the ISO up a stop more to give me a faster shutter speed and see how that goes.

First this first game Lakewood went up against Serra High School.  I knew this was going to be a tough game for the Lancers and it was, but they continued to play tough and finally in the 4th quarter were able to put some points on the board.  I have to say although it was a slow start, they did end on a stronger note.

Next week finds the Lancers going to Pioneer High School to go against La Serna.

Please enjoy some highlight shots from the game.

Lakewood Freshmen Football vs Serra

I"m very excited as football season has officially started for me.  My first game of the season was the Lakewood freshmen game vs Serra.

Lakewood did not fare well during this opening game with a final score of 0-45 Serra.  This made it hard to capture Lakewood in action with a lot of missed run and passes.  Of course I was able to walk away with some very nice shots, just not as much as I would like to leave a game with.

This was the first football with my new Canon 7D mark II, which handled very well.  The test will be tonight as I cover the varsity game under the lights at Lakewood High.  I can't wait to see how the new camera handles the low light, especially compared to what I was used to with my prior camera (Canon 1D mark IIn, which had a max ISO of 3200).

So enjoy the shots as much as I enjoyed being on the field capturing the action.

Lakewood Varsity Football vs Serra

It felt great to be back on the sidelines under the lights.

This was a touch game for the wood, but they played with a lot of heart and never gave up, even when it seemed like there was just so much against them.  Way to keep those heads up high and play through it.

Here are some of my favorites from the game and I have to start off with just a couple of the cheerleaders.

Enjoy.

Lakewood JV Football vs Serra

Football has officially started for me and my first game finds me at Lakewood covering the JV game against Serra High.

This is my roots and where I developed my eye for action - FOOTBALL.  It was great being on the sidelines and I'm looking forward to a couple of months of action .

As my prior post where I indicated I had the opportunity to play with a 1DX, well that continues with me using it for this game.  Even though I can't afford one and will have to eventually go back to my Canon Mark IIn, I love that camera and I love how the shots look.  They are just so much clearer than what I normally get.  Tonight I get to try it out under the lights and I will be pushing that ISO to see how it looks at those very high ISO's, because in the end that's what I have the camera for, to test it and its limitations.  Noise or no noise - I'm pushing that ISO tonight.

Enjoy the shots as much as I did taking them.
