Lakewood Track vs Wilson

Lakewood's first league track meet against Wilson High School. It was a great afternoon to be out competing and photographing these athletes in action. Today I intended on focusing my attention on the pole vaulters, but while I waited for their event to start I shot some of the runners.

Now I don't know what to say about this opening shot, but will say that he could possibly add a few seconds on his time if he'd put that thing back in his mouth.

Once the pole vault event started I stayed there during the rest of the meet to get all of Lakewood's pole vaulters. And of course I took shots of Wilson's vaulters as well.

This young lady was going for the school's record, which is her record from last year. During her junior year she broke the school's record twice at a final height of 9'. During this event she had already matched it and was going for a new school record of 9' 6". She did great but unfortunately didn't make it. As this is only the first league meet of the season, there is no doubt that she will break it before the season is over.

These two shots were taken on the opposite or landing side of the mat. I just wanted to get some different angles and see get more faces in the shots.

Moved back and shot some vertical shots when these guys started jumping around the 12' mark. I wanted to show the height and control these athletes have at this angle.

High School ShotPut and Discus

Long Beach High Schools don't have the facilities to have the discuss event at their school and instead have it at Long Beach Community College (LBCC) the day prior to the school's track meet. Now normally they would have the discuss event on Wednesday and then have the shot put event during the normal meet the following Thursday. This year they are attempting to have both the discuss and shot put events on Wednesday at LBCC

Well this last Wednesday was my son's first league meet against Wilson High School. Last year as a freshmen my son took second place for the Moore League shot put and first place for the Moore League discuss. This year he's off to a great start for league events. He took first place in both the shot put and discuss. Here are two pictures of his winning throws.

Lakewood Track at Long Beach State

"Jim Arqilla Long Beach Relays"
Had another track meet at Long Beach State. This was a inventational meet and only the top two from each school was invited. My son was invited for fresh / soph shot put and discuss. As in most meets there's a lot of hurry up and wait, so while waiting for my son's events I took various pictures of the athlete's in action. I brought both my 70-200 f/2.8L and 300 f/2.8L. For these meets I really need to bring my 24-70 f/2.8L as well. There's so much going on and so many opportunities to use each lens, but what do I do, I keep the 300 on and deal with the tightness. But man, do I love the end results.

I was able to get a few shots of the runners, boy / girls pole vaulting, boys / girls high jump, and of course my son throwing the shot put and discuss. So enjoy.
I'll start off with some shots of my son. He is continuing his domination with the shot put by placing first. Last year as a freshmen he took second in the Moore League and this year he looks have a huge desire to take first in the league. Our school doesn't run a JV team, so he is throwing the shot put and discuss for the fresh / soph team. As for the discuss, he still doesn't have his throw down. He should be placing in the top three by the end of the year, but for now he took 5th.

Lakewood Track at Brea

A nice day to shoot some track. This last Saturday my son's school participated in a multi-school track relay. My son throws the shot-put and discuss and was going to run in the throwers 4x100 relay. So I go to get some shots of him in action and take various other action shots of the athletes. I try to focus on my son's school for picture sales.
As I said it was a great day and unfortunately I wore the wrong clothing. The morning are somewhat cool this time of the year so I wore long pants and a hooded sweatshirt, but as the day went on it just got hotter and hotter. Man I wish I would have at least wore shorts.
I was able to get some action shots of the hurdles, high jumpers, long jumpers, throwers, and runners. I used my beast (300 f/2.8) for all of these pictures. Did I tell you that I just love that lens. It is well worth the kid I had to sell to buy it. So take a look and leave a comment telling me what you think. I enjoy hearing from those who stop by.

One of the varsity throwers from Lakewood.

Here are two shots of my son, one throwing the shot put and the other throwing the discuss. He was first in the shot put, that was until another kid the next flight (heat) threw about 5' further. So he ended up getting in second. As for the discuss, I think my son is losing his focus and drive for the discuss. He did such a great job last year but now has a freshmen on the team who is throwing a lot farther then he did for his personal best. I think he is just discouraged that he's not doing as well as this younger kid. No matter what he throws, I'm proud of what he's accomplished.

During this meet they had some of the throwers run a 4x100 relay, which was unsactioned (just for fun). The thing is our fresh/soph team ran it faster then the fresh/soph runners did. My son ran the anchor for the throwers fresh/soph group. The second shot is of my son winning the race.
